Polarizing Filter

I have a circular polarizing filter that I have never really used. I didn’t really know how until recently. Basically it cuts down on the reflected light giving deeper blue in the sky and brighter whites in the clouds. It will cut down on the reflections from non metallic surfaces such as water and glass. By rotating the filter you get varying degrees of this effect.

The photo below shows a great sky scene with a deep blue sky and white clouds that just pop off the photo. the reflections from the water are all but gone, the white specs are gulls. The sun was to my left at about 90°. I’ve done only minor adjustments to the sharpness of this image.

  1. Beautiful. Is that Canada?

  2. Yes, that is Fork Lake, in Alberta. About 2 hours or so north east of Edmonton.
